Harris Elementary welcomed University of Central Arkansas students and staff of the National Science Teachers Association, along with their life-sized whale, Uca. The presentation was part of a partnership with the university featuring STEM activities for all grade levels.
Harris students learned about whales, had the opportunity to walk through the whale, see the vertebrae of an actual whale, and participate in an experiment to see how their blubber keeps them warm in the ocean. Students also read "Revenge of the Whale" to learn more about whales.
Students were surprised by the size of the whale and enjoyed the experiments learning more about the mammal.
As part of the UCA/Harris partnership, the university will host various activities at the school throughout the school year.
